'Medical Museum Materials'

We are really pleased to announce our next exhibition ‘Medical Museum Materials’ and our three new lead Artists on the project who will be working with us on this.

‘Medical Museum Materials’ is part of the upcoming Air Arts exhibition ‘Connection’, it will enable the Artist to explore how they ‘connect’ with the many different materials present in our collection and share their findings through the exhibition, workshops with UHDB staff and film that will be shared with our hospital audiences. We have a fascinating array of materials present in the objects including glass, ceramic, paper, wood, plastics, metal, stone, ink and paint. It is going to be very exciting to see what the Artist’s discover, create and share.

Jo Morley

Jo Morley is a portrait painter who uses oils, acrylics and digital media. She is drawn to capturing the likeness of her subjects and by challenge of portraying the differences in textures, patterns and surfaces in her compositions.

Jo has been involved with the UHDB Medical Museum project since the beginning and it was this insight coupled with her talent that led her to create an incredibly life like painting of Beth (Project Curator) and Emma (Project Officer) amidst the ‘Medical Museum’ collection. The work was very well received and led to Jo being invited to be a Lead Artist on the project, to share her research and ideas in oil painting and portraits through workshops, talks and film on the project.

Elaine Lim Newton

Elaine is a ceramic sculptural Artist who creates work that takes inspiration from the natural world alongside architectural structures. Pieces are created intuitively with meditative repetitive patterns and forms, often sculptures or installations will also highlight the bonds and importance of community and family.

We were fortunate enough to work with Elaine on our last exhibition ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ on the project where she created a beautiful mixed media piece inspired by a children’s development tool. We invited Elaine to continue her research this time with a focus on the materials she both is inspired by in the collection and works with.

Anna Roebuck: The Making House

Anna Roebuck is a mixed media jeweller and artist, from The Making House in Burton on Trent. The joy of experimentation and material manipulation is a core part of her practice, which has led her to use a huge variety of materials and techniques, from the unlikely to her more conventional use of metals. Inspiration comes from many places, but sustainability and the human connection to the environment is a theme she regularly comes back to.

Anna was invited to join the project after being the first Artist to lead the Air Arts ‘Made in the NHS’ staff workshops. We felt her rapport with UHDB staff , vibrant presence and exciting practice would bring much to the project. We are excited to discover what Anna will choose to explore, create and share with our audiences.

'Medical Museum Materials' opens at the Royal Derby Hospital in October 2022 with workshops and talks for UHDB staff.
